About our Lead Host - Joe Smarro

Joe Smarro is a decorated combat veteran from the United States Marine Corps. He honorably served in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. After completing his enlistment, he moved to South Texas where he joined the San Antonio Police Department (2005). Joe was one of the original members of the SAPD Mental Health Unit and helped grow that unit into a nationally recognized best-practices policing program.

Joe served on the SAPD MHU for 11 years. In 2018 he gave a TEDx San Antonio talk, titled: I See You. He has been highlighted in numerous media outlets and documentaries. Most notably he is one of the main subjects in the Emmy award-winning documentary: Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops. Joe is an alum of the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV) Texas A&M (2016). Once he completed his certification, he founded SolutionPoint+ in 2017 and is the current CEO.

SolutionPoint+ is a national training and consulting firm that cultivates mental wellness to maximize human capital and promote safety within organizations. Joe voluntarily left the San Antonio Police Department in 2020 to focus on making changes within the behavioral health and criminal justice systems around the country. His big hairy audacious goal is to eradicate suicide among all first responders, starting in law enforcement. Joe is a recent Amazon best-selling author from his new book, Unarmed: De-escalation Techinques to Cultivate Courage, Compassion, and Connection.

When Joe is not speaking, training, consulting, or working on his next book – he will most likely be found on a golf course.

About our Co-Host - Jesse Trevino

Jesse Trevino is a decorated United States Marine combat veteran with a distinguished career in law enforcement and mental health intervention. He served as a sworn member of the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) for over a decade, making significant contributions to the nationally recognized Mental Health Unit (MHU). As a certified mental health peace officer and crisis intervention instructor, Jesse played a pivotal role in implementing sequential intercept model programs to improve public safety and crisis response.

Beyond his fieldwork, Jesse advanced to roles as an instructor, training coordinator, and curriculum developer at the SAPD Training Academy. After being promoted to detective, he became the Behavioral Threat Assessment Program Coordinator for the Southwest Texas Fusion Center. In this role, he established and led the first local-level threat assessment management program in the nation, successfully preventing multiple acts of mass violence through proactive threat management and jail diversion strategies.

Jesse holds an A.A. from Northwest Vista College, a B.A. in Criminal Justice, and an M.S. in Criminal Justice & Criminology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is currently in the dissertation phase of his Ph.D. at Walden University, where he is researching the experiences of crisis intervention officers in rural settings. As the co-founder and President of SolutionPoint+, an international training consultancy, Jesse continues to influence law enforcement training and crisis intervention strategies worldwide.

Joe Smarro is a decorated Marine veteran who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq before transitioning into law enforcement. He spent 11 years on the Mental Health Unit of the San Antonio Police Department, where he played a key role in reshaping crisis intervention training. Joe was the main subject of the Emmy-winning HBO documentary Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops, which highlighted the importance of mental health awareness in policing.

As the co-founder of SolutionPoint+, he has trained over 3,500 first responders nationwide on de-escalation, crisis intervention, and officer wellness. His expertise has led him to speak at TEDx, NYPD, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and Fortune 500 companies, where he shares insights on mental health, leadership, and self-care.

Jesse Trevino helped prevent multiple mass violence incidents by pioneering the first local-level threat assessment management program in the country. As a Marine combat veteran turned detective, he’s one of the rare few to transition from active crisis response to shaping national strategies in behavioral threat assessment.

His work in mental health intervention and public safety has influenced how police departments across the U.S. handle crisis situations, blending street-level experience with academic research. Jesse isn’t just an expert in law enforcement, he’s also a Ph.D. candidate diving deep into the realities of crisis intervention officers in rural America.

From the frontlines of combat to the forefront of public safety innovation, he’s redefining how communities approach crisis response and prevention.
